Hi4-Z version of Tank 500 launches as off-road optimized PHEV
On January 1, GWM launched the new Tank 500 Hi4-Z car. Described by Great Wall as a “pan off-road” car, there is only one configuration priced at 363,800 yuan (49,850 USD). This makes the price well over 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD) cheaper than the pre-sales price announced in December.

It should be noted that although the Hi4-Z version of the Tank 500 is a PHEV it is not a replacement for the Hi4-T. Externally, however, the two cars, with the exception of the badges, are identical. The dimensions are 5078, 1934, and 1905 mm, and the wheelbase is 2850 mm.
Where the Hi4-Z version differs fundamentally from the Hi4-T is with both the size of the battery pack and that it has a new decoupled 4-wheel drive structure. Great Wall claims that this is not only different from other PHEV off-roaders but also offers superior off-road ability.

The rear suspension of the Hi4-Z retains the architecture of a multi-link integral axle, which gives a longer suspension travel. This can achieve an exaggerated torsion angle when passing through a crater, and has a stronger ability to get out of trouble. Furthermore it has higher structural strength, which can meet high-intensity off-road conditions.
This is the first time Great Wall has equipped a car with the system. The Hi4-T system, due to the positioning of the drive shaft, means that the battery can only be positioned underneath the trunk floor, which not only eats into trunk space but also limits the size of the battery.
With the Hi4-Z system the battery is now located between the front and rear set of wheels in the chassis. This enables the car to be equipped with a 59.05 kWh battery pack. There is a 201 km range under WLTC conditions, which GWM says is sufficient usually for a week of all-electric driving.

The minimum ground clearance is 210 mm, and the Tank 500 Hi4-Z has a 29-degree approach angle and 24-degree departure angle. It has a comprehensive range of 1096 km, measured using WLTC.
Inside the Tank 500 Hi4-Z is largely the same as the Hi4-T version. It features a 12.3-inch LCD instrument display along with a 14.6-inch infotainment screen. In addition, it has a streaming rear-view mirror and a head-up display. There is a three-spoke steering wheel. The car is equipped with Great Wall’s latest Coffee OS 3.0 intelligent cockpit.
Creature comforts include Nappa leather, and both the front and rear seats are heated and ventilated, with the front seats also gaining a massage function.
The powertrain of the Hi4-Z is built around a 2.0T engine. This can provide 185 kW of power and 380 Nm of torque. It is the new E20NB Miller cycle engine, which debuted in 2024. It is coupled with a three-speed hybrid DHT transmission.
In addition, there are two electric motors that create a system combined power of 635 kW and peak torque of 1195 Nm. The front motor has 215 kW and 400 Nm of torque, while the rear motor provides up to 240 kW and 415 Nm.
This allows the Tank 500 Hi4-Z to have a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.6 seconds. Even when the car is in the feed state, acceleration can be achieved in five seconds. Fuel consumption is claimed to be 8.6 L/100km.
The battery is a ternary lithium NCM type and supports 163 kW fast charging. This, is claimed, to be 60% higher than that of other plug-in hybrid off-road vehicles. It means that a 30% to 80% fast charge takes only 15 minutes and that the discharge power reaches 600 kW.
It should be noted that the tank 500 Hi4-Z is available in four different colors. Along with black, gray, and white, There is another version available which has which progressively changes from white at the front to red at the rear.
GWM have high hopes for the Tank 500 Hi4-Z which attracted 6,000 orders in the first 24 hours of pre-sales.
