SAIC-Volkswagen’s ID. series was 2024’s best-selling joint venture EV in China

On January 1, the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture announced that its Volkswagen ID. series had sold more than 130,000 vehicles in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 23.8%, making it the best-selling EV among joint ventures in China. The series currently consists of the ID.3 Smart Edition, ID.4 X Smart Edition, and ID.6 X on sale per the official website. For reference, the series sold 105,223 and 70,029 units in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

The Volkswagen ID.3 Smart Edition has five trims on sale on the Chinese market, priced between 129,888 – 147,888 yuan (17,800 – 20,300 USD). All trims are RWD powered by a 125 kW (168 hp)/310 Nm permanent magnet synchronous motor, coupled with ternary lithium battery packs, providing a 450 km CLTC cruising range. The top speed is 160 km/h.

The 2025 ID.4 X Smart Edition was officially launched in July 2024, offered in three trims priced between 159,888 – 211,888 yuan (21,900 – 29,000 USD). Power comes from a rear permanent magnet synchronous motor that outputs either 125 kW (168 hp)/310 Nm as the low-power version or 170 kW (228 hp)/310 Nm as the high-power version. The ternary lithium battery packs offer CLTC pure electric ranges of 425 km and 601 km, respectively.

The Volkswagen ID.6 X is a seven-seater pure electric SUV, available in four trims with a price range of 259,888 – 329,388 yuan (35,600 – 45,100 USD). The RWD is powered by a rear permanent magnet synchronous motor that outputs 132 kW (177 hp)/310 Nm or 150 kW (201 hp)/310 Nm, while the AWD adds an 80 kW (107 hp)/162 Nm front AC asynchronous motor. The standard ternary lithium battery packs provide a CLTC cruising range from 460 km to 617 km.

Moreover, SAIC-Volkswagen sold more than 1.2 million vehicles in 2024, of which the sales of the Volkswagen brand exceeded 1.14 million vehicles, ranking first in sales among joint ventures in China. It is worth pointing out that earlier in November 2024, SAIC-Volkswagen announced that both parties signed an agreement to extend the joint venture partnership to 2040. Looking ahead, by 2030, SAIC-Volkswagen plans to launch 18 new models, 15 of which will be developed specifically for the Chinese market. In the short term, the joint venture aims to launch three new models by 2026, including a PHEV sedan, a mid-to-high-end EREV SUV, and a pure electric SUV.
