SAIC Maxus G50 PHEV launches pre-sale with a sub-20,000 USD price

SAIC Maxus officially commenced pre-sales for its G50 PHEV minivan on Thursday. Positioned as a compact multi-purpose vehicle, the G50 PHEV is set to be the only hybrid MPV globally available at the $20,000 price point, after promotional offers.

Maxus is a brand that belongs to the state-owned SAIC. It was initially based on the British LDV Maxus brand, which SAIC bought in 2010. LDV was a van maker in Birmingham that went out of business in 2008. Later, it was owned by companies such as Russian GAZ and Eco Concept before it ended up with SAIC in 2010. Some Maxus cars (mostly pickup trucks) are available worldwide with MG badges.

The G50 PHEV is equipped with a 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid system, featuring an 18.65 kWh battery pack. The 1.5-liter H15R engine delivers a maximum power of 72 kW while the drive motor offers a maximum power of 160 kW. The battery provides a pure electric driving range of 85 kilometers under CLTC testing standards. With a CLTC low fuel consumption of 4.7L/100km in hybrid mode and a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 1.42L/100km. The car boasts a comprehensive range of up to 1405km.

The vehicle’s dimensions mirror the gasoline-powered Maxus G50 MAX, with a length of 4825mm, width of 1825mm, and height of 1778mm (1800mm with roof rack), and a wheelbase of 2800mm. The G50 Hybrid offers versatile seating configurations with 5, 6, and 7-seater options. The vehicle’s rear is distinguished by a new “G50 MAX PHEV” badge.

The pre-sale price for the SAIC Maxus G50 PHEV starts at 152,800 yuan (21,060 USD). With launch promotions, including an offer where a 1,000 yuan deposit can be leveraged for a 10,000 yuan discount, and trade-in/purchase bonuses up to 10,000 yuan, effectively reduce the starting price to under 20,000 USD.

While slightly higher than comparable ICE models like the GAC Trumpchi M6 or even the ICE version of the SAIC Maxus G50, the G50 PHEV presents a compelling value proposition in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. It also offers a significant price advantage over SAIC Maxus’s existing hybrid MPV, the Mifa 5 Plug-in (priced from 22,550 to 26,680 USD).
