3.06 L/100 km fuel efficiency
The second-generation BYD Song Pro DM-i (see specs) is equipped with BYD’s latest fifth-generation DM technology and maintains low fuel consumption even in a depleted battery state. Real-world testing recorded a 3.06 L/100 km fuel consumption, with some reports suggesting as low as 2.6 L/100 km on urban highways. The compact plug-in hybrid SUV is priced between 112,800 to 142,800 yuan (15,500 to 19,630 USD) in four trims. We took it on the road to see how the car performs on the urban roads of Zhuhai in China.
Exterior
The design of the Song Pro DM-i follows the BYD Dynasty signature styling language, featuring a sizeable chrome-accented grille flanked by slim LED headlights. The front fascia gives the vehicle a bold and dynamic presence, while the sculpted side profile and aerodynamic lines aim to improve efficiency. The rear design includes a full-width LED taillight bar, enhancing visibility and adding to its contemporary look. The vehicle rides on alloy wheels, with different size options available depending on the trim level. The overall design balances aesthetics with functionality.
Interior
The Song Pro DM-i features a well-organized cabin with good-quality materials. Soft-touch surfaces and synthetic leather upholstery. The SUV has a large rotating central touchscreen, as seen across all BYD models, supporting multiple applications and continuous voice recognition. The interface is responsive, and the integration of BYD’s DiLink system ensures compatibility with a wide range of third-party apps. Safety and convenience are enhanced with 360-degree panoramic imaging, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. Additionally, Apple device users can now utilize NFC key support for added convenience, allowing easy vehicle access without needing a traditional key fob. The driver’s digital instrument cluster provides real-time efficiency data.
Storage options include large door pockets, a center console compartment, and a wireless charging pad for mobile devices. The rear seats offer a reclining function, adding to passenger comfort during long journeys. Cargo capacity is generous, with a flat loading floor that makes it easy to transport bulky items. The rear seats fold to expand storage space. Rear-seat passengers benefit from spacious legroom, independent air vents, and well-padded seats.
Behind the wheel
The Song Pro DM-i offers multiple driving modes, including EV, HEV, and battery-saving. In EV mode, the SUV operates solely on electric power, providing a quiet, smooth driving experience ideal for urban commuting. HEV mode intelligently switches between the engine and electric motor to maximize efficiency, particularly in longer journeys. In battery-saving mode, the system prioritizes fuel use to conserve battery charge for later use, which is beneficial when charging infrastructure is limited. The transition between these modes is seamless.
The chassis is tuned for comfort, absorbing road imperfections while maintaining a controlled body roll. Acceleration is smooth, with the engine engaging smoothly in depleted battery mode. The vehicle remains quiet, with minimal vibrations, thanks to refined NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) control. The steering is light and precise, making city maneuvering effortless while maintaining stability at higher speeds.
The vehicle underwent a fuel consumption test in a depleted battery state, achieving a remarkable 3.06 L/100 km. In mixed driving conditions, including urban roads and highways, consumption levels as low as 2.6 L/100 km were observed. The Song Pro DM-i’s advanced hybrid system optimizes energy use, ensuring exceptional efficiency without sacrificing performance. The 1.5L engine is designed for hybrid operation, featuring a thermal efficiency of over 43%. Combined with the electric motor, the system balances power and fuel savings, particularly in city traffic, where regenerative braking helps recover energy.
Verdict
The Song Pro DM-i is a well-rounded compact SUV that has gained popularity, particularly for its new 71 km electric range option, which caters well to daily commuting needs. Consumer surveys highlight its advanced hybrid technology, affordability, and low operating costs, making it a strong competitor in the hybrid SUV segment.
The second-generation BYD Song Pro DM-i further enhances the driving experience with its efficient fuel consumption, comfortable chassis, and intelligent features, solidifying its appeal among eco-conscious buyers. However, we will find the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 at a lower price, which offers a more modern design.
