On February 21st, BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 Intelligent Driving Edition officially went on sale. Compared to the regular version, the updated model features a roof-mounted LiDAR and a new in-car voice assistant integrated with an AI model.

The updated model features four variants, two with BYD’s God’s Eye intelligent driving system, and two with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 system. This update standardizes the entire Fang Cheng Bao line-up to have intelligent driving capabilities, as the Bao 8 launched with a LiDAR module.

BYD’s God’s Eye variants at 239,800 yuan (33,000 USD) for the Max version and the Ultra version starts at 259,800 yuan (35,800 USD). Huawei’s Qiankun ADS variant starts at 284,800 yuan (39,250 USD) and the top-level trim starts at 329,800 yuan (45,450 USD).

A new feature part of the Bao 5 update is the AI agent capable of performing functions such as drawing, poetry, shopping, tour guiding, and route planning. It’s also able to identify driver habits and recognize street signs and environments through imaging.

In terms of interior, the car is equipped with a 4.5L refrigerator, 12.3-inch instrument screen, and 15.6 HD central control screen. It also features Nappa leather seats with ventilation, heating, and massage functions, and a sound system with up to 18 speakers.

Bao 5 variants with the option of Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 will support custom parking, omnidirectional collision prevention system, and off-vehicle parking functions. As long as there is a 20 cm distance from either side of the parking space, the vehicle can automatically park without the driver inside. Additionally, the car can also drive out of a parking space to the owner’s location, such as a doorway entrance.

In case of rain or snow conditions, Qiankun ADS 3.0 supports automatic emergency braking (AEB), which will combine speed, sensor, and road information to stop more stably and better control speed to avoid skidding.

The Bao 5 Intelligent Driving Edition is powered by a 1.5T plug-in hybrid system, with the engine’s maximum power at 143 kW, and front and rear motor powers at 200 kW and 285 kW. Other features, such as the standard rear differential lock, are expected to be similar to the standard Bao 5 version,

The Bao 5 Intelligent Driving Edition, with a 265/65 R18 external spare tire, measures 4890 mm in length (4930 mm with a 275/55 R20 spare tire), 1970 mm in width, and 1920 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2800 mm.

BYD first announced a cooperation between Fang Cheng Bao and Huawei Qiankun ADS last year, with the Bao 8 being the first BYD model featuring Huawei’s intelligent driving solution. Future Fang Cheng Bao models are also being developed in collaboration with Huawei, with a focus on off-road intelligent driving. BYD has stated they are adopting a “parallel” strategy in regards to intelligent driving, both developing in-house solutions and working with external partners.
