Changan’s Deepal S09 officially released in China as EREV rival of Aito M9
The Changan’s Deepal S09 flagship EREV crossover was officially released in China as the Li Auto L9 and Aito M9 rival. It will start domestic sales in the first quarter of 2025 with a starting price of 350,000 yuan (48,025 USD). The S09 will be seemingly cheaper than its core competitors while offering a 3105-mm wheelbase, 362 kW (485 hp), and a Huawei OS on board.
Deepal is a middle-to-high NEV brand under the Changan Group. This brand was launched in 2022. Three years later, its model line comprises five vehicles: L07 and SL03 sedans, S05 and S07 crossovers, and G318 off-road SUV. Today, the Deepal S09 flagship SUV was officially released. It will enter the market in Q1 2025.

The Deepal S09 adopts the brand’s latest design language with a closed front end with a thin taillight strip, main headlights integrated into the front bumper, and a trapeze-shaped air intake. The Deepal S09 has retractable door handles, a LiDAR sensor on the roof, and a single taillight unit in the back. After Deepal’s flagship SUV was first unveiled in official photos, lots of netizens noticed its resemblance to the Li Auto L9. Deepal officials admitted that these vehicles may look alike because they play in the same segment.
The Deepal S09 is a large SUV with dimensions of 5205/1996/1800 mm and a wheelbase of 3105 mm. The brand’s officials highlighted that the length of the S09’s interior space reaches 3.7 meters. The car’s interior area reaches 4.3 square meters. The Deepal S09’s interior features six seats with a 2+2+2 layout.
Deepal cooperates with Huawei in the field of the infotainment system. So, the S09’s interior will adopt Huawei’s 43-inch augmented reality head-up display. The center console integrates two 15.6-inch OLED screens with a brightness of 1,000 nits. The front-row and second-row seats of the car support heating, ventilation, and 8-point massage functions. Another nice touch in the car’s cabin is the 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted 3K screen for the second-row passengers.
Another feature of the car is the Huawei-developed Harmony Space system and Huawei’s Qiankun 3.0 intelligent driving system. This EREV crossover also has a 10-liter storage box with heating and cooling functions. Its working temperature lies in a range between -6 to 50 degrees Celsius. Interestingly, the car’s center tunnel is movable. So, the second-row passengers can move it forward and backward. The final feature is the folding table for the right second-row passenger.
Deepal S09 powertrain and chassis
The Deepal S09 powertrain comprises the brand’s second-gen range extender. It adopts the 1.5-liter turbocharged JL469ZQ1 BlueCore generator for 110 kW (147 hp). Deepal G318 and Avatr 07 have the same ICE.
The entry-level Deepal S09 will be available with a single electric motor for 231 kW (310 hp) in the rear axle. The 4WD variant of this SUV adds an additional electric motor in the front axle with a peak power output of 131 kW (175 hp). The combined power output of the Deepal S09 reaches 362 kW (485 hp). The Deepal S09 has a single CATL-made LFP battery for 40.18 kWh on board. Its electric range reaches 180 km. The car’s battery supports 3C charging. It means it can be charged with 120 kW power.
The Deepal S09 adopts front and rear independent suspension. This vehicle is also equipped with a combination of CDC and air suspension systems.
The Deepal S09 will enter the Chinese market in Q1 2025 with a starting price of 350,000 yuan (48,025 USD). Thanks to the RWD modification, the S09 is seemingly cheaper than its core rivals.
