Chinese vehicle registrations in the first month of the year were mostly up. BYD was up 69%, MG was up 84%, Great Wall Motor was up 267%, while Nio was down 33% year-over-year (YoY). For comparison, Tesla was down 59.5% YoY.

In January, the new vehicle registrations were down 2.8% YoY to 207,640 units in Germany. Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were up 53.5% year-over-year to 34,498 units. Registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were up 23.1% to 17,712 units. BEVs represented 16.6% of vehicle registrations, while PHEVs represented 8.5%.
The new vehicle registrations are published by the German Federal Motor Authority, which tracks new car plate registrations in the country and compiled by CarNewsChina.

SAIC-owned MG got the first spot with 1,645 registered vehicles, down 11.3% from 1,854 units in December and up 84% from 896 vehicles in the same month last year. In 2024, MG sold 20,977 vehicles in Germany.
State-owned SAIC was hit the hardest by EU import duties as it was a non-cooperative company. MG is subject to an additional 35.3% tariff to the EU on top of the existing 10% duty, making the total tariff rate 45.3%.
GWM registered 330 vehicles under its Ora brand, down 24.8% from 439 units in December and up 267% from 90 vehicles in the same month last year. In 2024, GWM sold 3,002 vehicles in Germany.

Geely’s Polestar registered 235 vehicles, down 28.4% from 328 units in December and up 114% from 110 vehicles in the same month last year.
In 2024, Polestar sold 3,187 vehicles in Germany. All Polestar EVs sold in the EU are China-made in Geely plants, mainly in Chengdu and Hangzhou.
Geely is subject to an additional 18.8% tariff, bringing the total import duty to 28.8%.
BYD registered 235 vehicles, down 27.2% from 323 units in December and up 69% from 139 vehicles in the same month last year. In 2024, BYD sold 2,891 vehicles in Germany.
Volkwagen-backed Xpeng registered 94 vehicles, 5.1% down from 99 in December. YoY comparison is not available as Xpeng started entered Germany in March 2024, with deliveries starting in the second half of the year.
In 2024, Xpeng registered 362 vehicles in Germany, and in December, the company announced it reached the milestone of 10,000 delivered cars in Europe.
Lotus registered 42 vehicles, up 2.4% from 41 units in December and up 121% from 19 vehicles in the same month last year.
In 2024, Lotus sold 365vehicles in Germany.
Nio registered 18 vehicles, down 41.9% from 31 units in December and down 33% from 27 vehicles in the same month last year.
In 2024, Nio sold 398 vehicles in Germany. Nio is subject to an additional 20.7% import tariff from the EU, and the total tariff is now 30.7%.
For comparison, Tesla registered 1,277 vehicles, down 59.5% from the same month last year.
In October 2024, the EU finalized its decision to impose definitive countervailing duties on battery electric vehicle (BEV) imports from China. The finalized duties were set as follows:
- BYD: 17.0%
- Geely: 18.8%
- SAIC: 37.6%
- Nio, Xpeng and other cooperative companies: 20.7%
These duties are in addition to the existing 10% tariff and are set to remain in force for five years until the end of October 2029.
