Nio’s Firefly hatchback EV revealed to have 420 km CLTC range
Additional details about Nio’s upcoming Firefly EV have been revealed via the latest Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) catalog. The vehicle is confirmed to be equipped with a 42.1 kWh battery pack and offers a CLTC range of 420 km, delivering 10 km of range per kWh.
The MIIT releases new vehicle declaration catalogs periodically containing technical specs of upcoming vehicles. This recent catalog contains a list of “New Energy Vehicle Models Exempt from Vehicle Purchase Tax”, with the Firefly EV being featured under the pure battery EV section.
More on the Firefly EV
Like other NIO models, the Firefly will support battery swapping, making the battery swappable, chargeable, and upgradable. According to previous MIIT filings, the battery pack is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from Sunwoda, first time Nio supplier.
The vehicle has been open for pre-sale since last Nio Day, with a pre-sale price of 148,800 yuan (20,400 USD), and is set to officially launch in April this year. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4003/1781/1557 mm, with a wheelbase of 2615 mm.
According to official sources, the car features lightweight, low-drag wheels and highly customized low-rolling-resistance tires to improve energy efficiency. Additionally, its electric drive efficiency, battery energy density, high and low-voltage management, and overall thermal management strategy will contribute to better energy consumption performance.
For the powertrain, the car will be equipped with a rear-wheel-drive motor with a maximum power output of 105 kW. It also features a near 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and a rear-wheel-drive motor layout, ensuring better traction and handling.
In addition, the Firefly’s interior has been revealed to feature a floating full LCD instrument panel and central control screen, a dual-spoke multifunction steering wheel, and a center console without physical buttons, adopting a column-mounted gear shifter.
In terms of space, the Firefly features a 92-liter front trunk, the largest in its class, offering layered storage and a built-in drainage function to accommodate various lifestyle gear. When the rear seats are folded down, the vehicle provides a flat cargo space of over 1,250 liters. The vehicle is also designed to meet the latest C-NCAP and Euro NCAP five-star safety standards, with a class-leading nine airbags as standard.
Firefly CEO Daniel Jin has stated that Firefly is designed as a global EV. The model will compete with BMW’s Mini brand, with a cheaper starting price, and Smart, Mercede’s and Geely’s joint venture. The brand is expected to enter the European market in Q2 2025, with Latin America and Southeast Asia to follow.
