Tesla announced the construction of the Shanghai Gigafactory in 2018 with a total investment of 50 billion yuan (6.82 billion USD) and a planned annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles. At the time, it was the first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project in China. In January 2019, the foundation of the Gigafactory was laid, and the first vehicle rolled off the assembly line in December of that year. In August 2022, the one-millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line, then the two-millionth vehicle in September 2023, followed by the three-millionth vehicle in October 2024. Currently, the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory is the world’s highest-capacity vehicle super factory.
