The first Xpeng EREV model was seen during road tests in China

HAINA

The first Xpeng EREV model was seen in China during road tests as it gets ready for the official release this year. It will have up to 430 km of electric range, and a 10-80% charging time of 12 minutes. The first Xpeng’s car to feature the EREV system is a large SUV.

Xpeng is one of the oldest Chinese NEV startups. It has been selling battery electric cars in the domestic market since 2018. Seven years later, Xpeng is ready to explore the new market segment of extended-range electric vehicles (EREV). They will be powered by the Xpeng Kunpeng Super Electric System. The first vehicle to get this powertrain is the Xpeng’s large crossover.

Xpeng EREV crossover spotted in China

The first Xpeng EREV crossover was spotted in China during road tests covered with thick camouflage. The outline of this mysterious model aligns with the design language of the Xpeng X9 minivan. It has a similarly sloped roofline and slanted D-pillars. However, this EREV model has no sliding rear doors. So, it is an SUV. Its other design features include retractable door handles and small side-view mirrors.

From the back of the Xpeng EREV crossover, we can notice a sizeable muffler. It is clear that this SUV has an exhaust system and an internal combustion engine under the hood. We can also notice that this crossover adopts an independent suspension in the rear axle. The exact dimensions of this model have yet to be revealed. It is a full-size model with three rows of seats inside. Xpeng didn’t specified the market segment and main rivals of its EREV models.

Editor’s comment

Last year, this NEV maker successfully launched two mass-market models: the Mona M03 sedan and the P7+ liftback. It is possible that Xpeng will continue this marketing strategy by launching a low-priced SUV with a range extender. This way, it will rival the Stellantis-backed Leapmotor C16 SUV with a price range of 155,800 – 184,800 yuan (21,300 – 25,280 USD).

On the other hand, the Xpeng’s new model will feature the brand’s Kunpeng Super Electric System. It boasts impressive specs of up to 430 km of electric range, around 1,400 km of mixed range, and a 10 – 80% charging time of 12 minutes. This powertrain has an 800V battery pack with 5C charging technology. It seems that the Xpeng crossover has too many technological features to play in the mass market segment. It is more likely to rival such cars as the Li Auto L9 and the Aito M9, which have a price tag above 400,000 yuan (54,720 USD).
