The five-door Wuling Hongguang Mini EV will start sales on February 22
The five-door variant of the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV electric city car from GM’s Chinese joint venture will start sales in China on February 22. It stands on the new Tianyu electric architecture and offers a length of 3256 mm. This EV can drive up to 205 km, and it has a 30 kW (40 hp) electric motor in the rear axle.
Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is a small electric vehicle developed for urban mobility by the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture. The first-generation Hongguang Mini EV with three doors (including the trunk door) entered the Chinese market in 2020 and rapidly became viral. This small car became the world’s bestselling EV in 2023. However, the demand for this vehicle seemingly declined. According to China EV DataTracker, Wuling sold 261,141 units of the Mini EV in China. Now, SGMW aims to make up its lost ground by launching the five-door Mini EV with new styling.
More about the five-door Wuling Mini EV
Wuling officials prefer to call this vehicle a four-door Mini EV. However, it is a five-door hatchback with a regular trunk door. So, we will stick to the five-door variant. The new Mini EV with five doors follows the brand’s latest design language, which was introduced by the Wuling Bingo hatchback. It has cute oval-shaped headlamps and rounded body panels.
The new Mini EV boasts dimensions of 3256/1510/1578 mm with a wheelbase of 2190 mm. It is 336 mm longer, 17 mm wider, and 43 mm lower than its predecessor. The car’s wheelbase stretched by 250 mm. It is a significant difference for the small hatchback segment. This size difference is due to the new Tianyu-S modular architecture the Hongguang Mini EV stands on.
This notable size increase enhanced the practicality of the new model. It has more space in the second-row seats and a trunk space of 123 liters. With rear seats folded down, storage expands to 745 liters. Moreover, the new Mini EV provides 19 storage spaces around the car.
The interior of the five-door Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is also new. This model has an 8-inch infotainment screen, an LCD instrument cluster, and four seats with integrated headrests. The new car integrates a ring-shaped cage body with a proportion of high-strength steel of 67%. It also has two airbags to enhance safety.
The new Wuling Hongguang Mini EV adopts the SGWM self-developed Shenlian LFP battery with a capacity of 16.2 kWh. It sends power to a 30 kW (40 hp) electric motor in the rear axle. The car’s top speed is 100 km/h. However, the new Mini EV accelerates to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds, which is a reasonable number for its class. The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV can drive up to 205 km on a single charge (CLTC conditions). Its battery can be charged 30% to 80% in 35 minutes with 20 kW DC.
New Wuling Honguang Mini EV sales start
The five-door Wuling Honguang Mini EV will finally enter the Chinese market on February 22. It is worth noting that display cars reached dealers across China in early December last year. But SGMW didn’t rush with the launch. The reason for this delay is unclear. However, the five-door Wuling Mini EV is finally making it to the market. CarNewsChina expects its price to start at around 40,000 yuan (5,475 USD).
The new Wuling Honguang Mini EV also has a three-door variant with the same length as its five-door sibling. However, there is no information about the launch of this modification.
