Volkswagen cuts ID.4 price in China, now starts bellow 20,000 USD

SAIC-Volkswagen reduced the price of the ID.4 X electric crossover in China by 13% to 139,900 yuan (19,200 USD). The EV now sells nearly 30% cheaper than its 2021 launch price of 193,900 yuan (26,700 USD).

Volkswagen conducts its operations in the Chinese market through two main joint ventures: SAIC-VW and FAW-VW (three, if you also count Volkswagen Anhui with JAC). Most of its models are manufactured and sold by both joint ventures, so to differentiate them, SAIC joint venture has X behind the name and FAW joint venture Crozz.

ID.4 X’s price cut of 20,000 yuan (2,700 USD) follows the same price cut as its sister car, ID.4 Crozz, which the FAW JV announced earlier this month. Volkswagen wants its JV partners to compete, and the SAIC joint venture is slightly more successful than the one with FAW, mainly because of ID.3, which is made only by SAIC, but when it comes to ID.4, FAW outsold SAIC last year.

ID.4 X trim name Old price (yuan) New price (yuan)
Smart 159,888 139,900
Smart Long Range 195,888 175,900
Smart Extreme Long Range 211,888 191,900

The entry-level version ID.4 X Smart is powered by a 52.8 kWh battery from CATL, good for a 425 km CLTC range. It is a WRD with a single electric motor with a maximum output of 125 kW 9168 hp and a peak torque of 310 Nm. The Smart trim has a new price of 139,900 yuan (19,200 USD)

The ID.4 X Long Range trim has a bigger battery with 80.2 kWh capacity and a 601 km CLTC range. The electric motor is also mounted on the rear axle and has 170 kW (228 hp) power. Peak torque remains the same at 310 Nm. The Long Range trim has a new price of 175,900 yuan (24,200 USD).

SAIC-VW’s ID.4 X sold 34,498 units last year based on insurance registrations, about 3,000 less than its sister model ID.4 Crozz from FAW JV. It is SAIC-VW’s second best-selling EV, following ID.3, which sold 93,816 units last year.

In January, Volkswagen ID.4 broke into the top 5 best selling EV in the US, Electrek reported earlier this week. In China, ID.4 X sold 1,020 units, good for being a 128th best selling EV. Its sister car ID.4 Crozz, sold 889 units, so their combined sales would catapult them into the top 100 in the 94th position.
