BMW Launches high-performance electric Mini models in China
BMW Group has announced that production of its all-electric high-performance models — the Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) Electric and Mini John Cooper Works Aceman — has commenced at the Spotlight Automotive facility in Zhangjiagang. These vehicles are set to enter the Chinese market soon.
Both models feature enhanced powertrains delivering 258 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque — 40 horsepower and 20 Nm more than their standard counterparts. A steering wheel-mounted Boost button provides an additional 27 horsepower for quick bursts of acceleration when needed.
The JCW Electric achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds, while the JCW Aceman completes the same sprint in 6.4 seconds. Both models are electronically limited to a top speed of 200 km/h.
Performance enhancements include sport-tuned suspension systems and aerodynamically optimized wheels (18-inch for the JCW Electric and 19-inch for the Aceman) fitted with high-performance tires for improved handling.
The JCW Electric preserves the 2526mm wheelbase of the Mini Electric, while the JCW Aceman retains the 2606mm wheelbase of the standard Aceman, maintaining practical dimensions despite their performance focus.
Local production at Spotlight Automotive — a joint venture between BMW and Great Wall Motor — has enabled more competitive pricing. While the JCW variants will command a premium over standard models, they’re positioned to compete with other performance EVs like Zeekr X.
Both models feature a 54.2 kWh battery providing a WLTP-rated range of 355 kilometers, balancing performance capabilities with daily usability.
These new JCW electric models represent BMW’s commitment to combining performance heritage with modern electric technology in China’s competitive EV market.
The regular Electric Mini Cooper made by Spotlight Automotive debuted in China with a recommended price range of 209,800 – 259,800 yuan (28,930 – 35,830 USD). However, due to slow sales, Mini offers large discounts. As a result, customers can buy the Mini Cooper for 148,800 – 194,800 yuan (20,520 – 27,420 USD) just a few months later. The regular Electric Mini Cooper has dimensions of 3858/1756/1458 mm (length/width/height) with a wheelbase of 2526 mm. The Aceman is slightly larger in size.
