The EV version of the BYD Qin L has been spotted testing. Although the car shares its name and styling with a PHEV model launched last year, the similarities probably end there.

Notably, the car was pictured testing with a version of the Seal, which also had various parts, such as the BYD badging blanked out. It is probable that the Qin L uses the e-platform 3.0 Evo that underpins much of the Ocean series.

The car features daylight running lights underneath the main headlight clusters which extend further into the grille. It has a largely enclosed front face.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published the declaration information about the forthcoming EV version of the Qin L. Interestingly, the EV version is overall significantly smaller than the DM-i version (see specs), but the wheelbase is actually longer at 2820 mm compared to 2790 mm for the PHEV.

The length of the EV version is 4720 mm, down from 4830 mm, and the width is also slightly less, down by 20 mm at 1880 mm, while the height of 1495 mm remains the same. There were two MIIT listings with one showing a curb weight of 1670 kg and the other 1800 kg. Both versions are offered with either 16 or 17-inch wheels.

There will likely be two different battery capacities for the EV version of the Qin L. The batteries will be BYD’s lithium iron phosphate blade battery. Autohome speculates that the car will use the second-generation version of the blade battery

The major known difference is the electric motor. In the lighter version, the Qin L uses a 110 kW TZ180XSR electric motor. Heavier versions use a TZ200XSBE electric motor with up to 160 kW of power. Both motors are produced by BYD.

Spy shots of the interior of the Qin L EV show that it is very similar to that of the Qin L DM-i. There is a large floating centrally mounted infotainment screen along with an instrument panel. The car uses a crystal-like rocker-style drive selector.

Sales are likely to begin within the next three months and certainly within the first half of 2025.
