Deepal S09 SUV exposed as the new flagship EREV for Changan owned brand

The rapidly expanding Deepal brand from Changan is about to get a new flagship SUV. Thanks to a government ministry, we now know a lot more about the Deepal S09, which, at least initially, is only available as an EREV.

Courtesy of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), we know that the new Deepal S09’s dimensions are 5205, 1996, and 1800 mm (l/w/h), with the wheelbase being 3105 mm. MIIT has two listings, each with two different curb weights. The first listing is for the single-motor version, and it has a curb weight of either 2510 or 2590 kg, whereas the second listing for the dual-motor version has curb weights of 2668 and 2690 kg.

According to both listings, the rated seating capacity is six people, making the car a three-row SUV. The angles of approach and departure for both the single-motor and dual-motor versions are 19 and 21 degrees, respectively. Buyers have a choice of a car with 20 or 21-inch wheels.

Powering the Deepal S09 is the Deepal Super Range Extension 2.0 technology, which is centered around the JL469ZQ1 Blue Whale HE1.5T hybrid engine, which can supply a maximum power of 110 kW. Single-motor versions use a 231 kW ATDM02 electric motor on the rear axle. Dual-motor versions add a 131 kW AYDM01 electric motor to the front axle. The top speed of both versions is 205 km/h.

Both the single and dual-motor S09 use lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL. Currently, there is no information about the capacities, but it is possible that there are two different battery sizes, which would, therefore, account for the difference in weight.

At the front, the Deepal S09 has a through-light design along with lower headlights. It has a largely enclosed front face with an air inlet at the bottom. Very obviously, the car has a Lidar unit at the top of the windshield, and it is expected to come with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 system. Whether the car will use a Huawei-supplied Lidar unit or the Hesai ATX unit covered by the recent Changan deal remains to be seen.

From the side, we can see that the Deepal S09 has a clean profile and hidden door handles. From this angle, it looks quite similar to a Li Auto model. At the rear, there is a through tail light broken only by the Deepal logo.

Prices are likely to start around 300,000 yuan (41,300 USD), and the S09 will probably go on sale in the first half of 2025.
