Stelato S9 EREV sedan from Huawei & BAIC reveals core specs in China

HAINA

The Stelato S9 EREV high-end sedan from Huawei and BAIC revealed core specs in China as it applied for the sales license. It boasts a fuel consumption rate of just 0.25 liter per 100 km. The extended-range variant will enter China in April to boost this sedan’s slow sales.

Stelato is a joint project between Huawei and BAIC. Its first car is the Stelato S9 sedan launched in August 2024. Initially, Huawei & BAIC aimed to sell 120,000 units of the S9 yearly. However, Stelato delivered only 3,008 units of this sedan to clients. The main drawback of this model is its high price of 399,800 yuan (54,850 USD). The cheaper EREV version of the Stelato S9 filed for a sales license in China to save this project.

More about the Stelato S9 EREV

The Stelato S9 EREV aligns with the design language of the BEV model. It can be distinguished only by a gas lid in the rear right fender. The S9 EREV has gauntlet-shaped headlights and a sizeable air intake in the front bumper. This vehicle adopts retractable door handles, a LiDAR on the roof, and multi-spoke wheels. From the back, the Stelato S9 also has a gauntlet-shaped taillight. Another feature of this vehicle is optional cameras instead of conventional side-view mirrors.

Dimensions of the Stelato S9 EREV are 5160/2005/1486 mm with a wheelbase of 3050 mm. For clarity, it is 19 mm shorter than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W223. The Stelato S9 rides on R20 or R21 wheels. Its front and rear tracks are 1706 and 1738 mm, respectively. The approach and departure angles are 13 and 15 degrees. The curb weight of the Stelato S9 lies in the 2300 – 2350 kg range.

Stelato S9 EREV powertrain

Stelato S9 EREV has a BAIC-produced 1.5-liter turbocharged A156T2H engine for 118 kW (158 hp). The same ICE acts as a generator on the BAIC BJ60 Thunder body-on-frame SUV. It is worth mentioning that this engine doesn’t transfer torque to the wheels. Instead, it sends power to a battery and an electric motor.

It was revealed that the Stelato S9 EREV has a WLTC fuel consumption rate of 0.25 L/100km for the variant with a CATL-made ternary NMC battery. The cheaper car with an LFP battery pack from CATL has a fuel consumption of 0.51 liters per 100 km. The battery capacity of the Stelato S9 has yet to be revealed.

The Stelato S9 EREV goes standard with a single electric motor in the rear axle with a peak power of 227 kW (304 hp). Its top speed reaches 204 km/h. Unfortunately, the EREV variant of the Stelato S9 has no 4WD option. It once again hints at the Huawei-BAIC’s attempt to lower its starting price.

Editor’s comment

Stelato S9 EREV will start sales at the Shanghai Auto Show in late April this year. Its market success will strictly depend on the price tag. However, it will be difficult for BAIC and Huawei to make a competitive offer since the Stelato S9’s rival Avatr 12 EREV from Changan and CATL has a starting price of 269,900 yuan (37,900 USD). So, the Stelato S9 is still in an insecure position.
