Xiaomi-backed electric sports car spotted on road test before launch
The electric sports car formerly known as the SC-01 (see specs) has been rebranded as the JMEV 01 and was recently seen testing in Guangzhou, China. Developed by Tianjin Gongjianpai Auto Technology with backing from Xiaomi, the vehicle is set to enter the market for 300,000 yuan (approximately 41,850 USD), competing with the MG Cyberster.

The JMEV 01 retains the sharp headlights, circular taillights, and two-door roadster styling of the original SC-01. It measures 4106 mm in length, 1830 mm in width, and 1170 mm in height, with a curb weight of 1,365 kg—25 kg heavier than the Porsche Cayman 987.
Powered by dual synchronous permanent magnet motors from Empower, the JMEV 01 delivers 320 kW (429 hp) and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. The car reportedly recorded a 1:06 lap time at Beijing’s Goldenport Park Circuit, similar to the Porsche 992 Carrera S.

The JMEV 01 features a mid-mounted ternary NMC battery from CALB, though its exact capacity remains undisclosed. The layout balances weight distribution, such as that of mid-engine sports cars like the Lotus Elise and Toyota MR2. It supports front-wheel, rear-wheel, four-wheel drive modes, and a sport mode. The CLTC-rated range is 520 km, with a charging time of under 25 minutes from 30% to 80%.
Initially unveiled in September 2022, the SC-01 has undergone significant changes. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology listing confirms its integration into the JMEV brand, a joint venture between Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) and Renault. This allows the vehicle to be sold under the JMEV 01 name.
Established in 2015, JMEV has faced challenges in both domestic and international markets. The brand has struggled despite Renault’s 50% stake, with all four Renault-appointed directors leaving the board in 2023. However, JMEV’s Nanchang plant, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles, will manufacture the JMEV 01, signaling a potential revival for the brand.

Production delays led to an apology from Tianjin Gongjianpai Auto Technology founder Feng Xiaotong in December 2024. However, with a sales license secured and production underway, the JMEV 01 is set for launch.
