Pre-sales of the BYD Shark began in Brazil on October 3, and it’s claimed the truck has attracted around 1,500 orders in 20 days. Henrique Antunes, commercial director of BYD Brazil, projects sales of between 10,000 and 15,000 a year, which would catapult it into being one of Brazil’s five best-selling midsize pickup trucks.
Currently, BYD is offering a solar-charging kit, a portable charger, and a year of free insurance with each reservation as an incentive. The Shark will be going head to head with the best-selling Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. It should be noted that currently, petrol and diesel trucks dominate sales in the market.

The Shark’s launch in Brazil follows the model’s earlier introduction to the Mexican market. It was launched in Mexico back in May, priced at 899,980 Mexican pesos (53,400 USD). It should be noted that so far this year, BYD has had explosive growth in the Brazilian market, with sales in the first nine months of the year up around 700%, making the brand the tenth best seller.
The Shark uses BYD’s DMO platform which is also used by the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5. It is a dedicated body-on-frame platform for PHEVs.
The DMO platform prioritizes energy efficiency by integrating the advantages of BYD’s DM-i and DM-p technology. Furthermore, it allows real off-road ability. Using the electric four-wheel drive system, the pickup can adjust the torque distribution between front and rear swiftly and intelligently. System responses are measured in milliseconds, allowing ultra-fast motor responses in conditions where there are rotational changes, such as in icy conditions. The energy center lock facilitates intelligent torque transfer between front and rear axles, enabling speeds up to 30 times faster than a mechanical center lock.

Dimensions of the Shark are 5457,1971, 1925 mm (l/w/h), and the wheelbase is 3260 mm. Not only does the BYD look the part, but it delivers the goods too, with a payload of up to 835 kg (1,841 lbs) and the volume of the bed at 1,450 liters (51.2 cubic feet). Furthermore, the BYD Shark has a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs).
Power comes from a combination of an ICE engine and electric motors. The 1.5T engine has a maximum power of 170 kW, while the front motor has 170 kW power and 310 Nm peak torque, and the rear motor has an output of 150 kW and 340 Nm torque. Combined output for the system is 320 kW and 650 Nm of torque. The truck uses a 29.58 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. This is sufficient to provide a pure electric range of 100 km under NEDC conditions and 840 km with a full battery and tank.
BYD seems to be steadily extending the Shark’s reach. It will officially launch in Australia on October 29, and deliveries are due around the end of the year.
