Denza D9 MPV to start using BYD’s DM 5.0 PHEV tech which should boost range

Up until now, BYD’s DM 5.0 technology has only been used by the main BYD brand. Thanks to a government ministry, we now know that it will also be used by the Denza brand. Listing information shows that the Denza D9 MPV will soon be available with BYD’s fifth-generation PHEV technology.

According to the regulatory listings from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the D9 will have both an all-wheel drive and a front-wheel drive version available with the DM 5.0 powertrain. The 4WD version tips the scales at 2795 kg, whereas the front-wheel drive is 100 kg lighter at 2695 kg. Both versions use 18-inch wheels. It should be noted that current 2024 versions of the D9 range in weight between 2470 and 2750 kg.

The dimensions of the D9 vary a bit according to the version, but the DM 5.0 version certainly is the same as some, measuring 5250, 1960, and 1900 (l/w/h) while the wheelbase is 3110 mm.

So far, there have been two versions of the DM 5.0 system, and given the size of the Denza D9, it is not surprising that it uses the more powerful version based around the BYD472ZQB 1.5T engine, which has a maximum power of 115 kW.

Both versions use a 200 kW motor on the front axle, and the AWD version adds an additional 45 kW motor to the rear axle. The motors are produced by various BYD subsidiaries. The maximum speed for both versions is 190 km/h, and both are rated for holding seven people, including the driver. With the fifth-generation PHEV technology, the combined range should receive a boost, and the fuel efficiency should increase.

Other than that, the car uses the blade lithium iron phosphate battery from BYD subsidiary FinDreams; nothing is listed about the battery. 2024 versions of the Denza D9 have either a 20 kWh or 40 kWh battery pack, and it is likely that the DM 5.0 version will have similar-sized packs.

The listing information also shows an optional Eye of the Gods logo in Chinese and optional Lidar, indicating that versions of the D9 will likely come with a high level of assisted driving.

Given BYD’s speed with launching the DM 5.0 versions of cars, we should expect to see sales begin within the next few months and possibly even before the end of 2024.
